UMass Baseball's Geannelis Tapped As A-10 Rookie Of The Week
May 13, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - After collecting two wins on the mound and hitting a team-best .625 last week, UMass baseball freshman Mike Geannelis was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. It marks the second honor of the season for the pitcher/designated hitter.
Geannelis posted a 0.00 earned run average over 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Minutemen, picking up both of the squad's victories over VCU last weekend to snap the Rams' streak of 12 straight series wins. He allowed just three hits over the two appearances, all singles, while striking out five and walking none.
In Sunday's contest, the rubber match of the weekend series, Geannelis entered a tie ballgame in the bottom of the eighth with a bases loaded, two-out jam and retired the first batter he faced to preserve the 4-4 tie. He went on to pitch a scoreless ninth with a one-run lead to secure head coach Mike Stone's 700th career victory.
He also earned the win in UMass' 5-4 extra inning triumph over the Rams on Friday, retiring 10 of the 12 batters he face, including four via strikeout.
Geannelis contributed offensively in the series for the Minutemen, as well, batting team-best .625 (5-for-8) on the week, logging multiple hits in both games where he appeared in the batting order with a double and an RBI in each contest.
