May 11, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - After helping the Minutemen to a huge Atlantic 10 series win over Rhode Island this past weekend, baseball senior Jim Macdonald was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week on Monday. Macdonald will be honored at this week's UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday in Amherst Room 1009 of the Campus Center.
Macdonald batted .438 (7-for-16) over the team's four contests last week, extending his hitting streak to seven straight games. The designated hitter drove in 10 runs and scored five with a double and two home runs while posting a .526 on-base percentage and a .875 slugging percentage.
Macdonald's 10 RBI all came in the Minutemen's three game series against URI, helping UMass become the first team to take an Atlantic 10 series from the Rams this season. The Minutemen won the final two games of the weekend against Rhode Island after dropping the opener in extra innings.
In game two, Macdonald belted the first grand slam of his career in the sixth inning as UMass overcame a 5-2 deficit on the way to a 10-9 victory. Then in the weekend finale, the co-captain opened the game with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first and finished the contest 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored as the Minutemen cruised to a 10-3 win.
Macdonald has played and started 41 of the teams 45 games this season and is batting .328 (57-for-174) with 34 runs scored, 42 RBI, eight doubles, one triple and a team-leading seven home runs.
UMass will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field before continuing its push for its first Atlantic 10 Tournament berth since 2003 with a three-game series against Duquesne this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
