May 5, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball sophomore right-hander Brandon Walsh and freshman outfielder Dylan Morris have been named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the A-10 announced on Monday. The pair helped the Minutemen with a 2-2 week last week, including the squad's first win over UConn since 2007 and a 9-1 triumph over George Mason.
Walsh pitched in both UMass victories, tossing a total of 11 innings and allowing only one unearned run on seven hits, all singles. He struck out six over the two appearances, while walking just one and limiting opposing batters to a .184 average. He collected his second save of the season as he tossed two scoreless innings against the Huskies last Tuesday and then hurled his first career complete game vs. the Patriots on Sunday.
Walsh also hit .308 (4-for-13) over three games, starting two behind the plate. He currently leads the Minutemen with a 3.02 earned run average this season over 44.2 innings.
Morris started three-of-four games for the Minutemen on the week, including both victories, and hit a team-best .750 (6-for-8) with four RBI and two runs scored. He also had two sacrifice bunts and a sac fly.
The West Barnstable, Mass., native posted three multi-hit games on the week and drove in three runs in UMass' win over George Mason. Against UConn, Morris was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the 5-4 victory.
The Minutemen will be back in action this Friday, May 9, when the squad will play host to VCU at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
