Torra Named A-10 Pitcher Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts freshman righthanded pitcher Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. This marks the second time this season Torra has been honored by the conference, as he was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on March 17.
Torra picked up a pair of victories against Atlantic 10 foes last week, while throwing two nine-inning complete games. He began the week with a complete game in the 7-2 victory over Temple on Monday, April 28, striking out a career-high nine batters. Torra allowed only two unearned runs and two walks against the Owls, while scattering 10 hits. He came back to throw another complete game in the 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday, May 4. Torra allowed only three hits to the Bonnies, while striking out six without allowing any runs or walks. He also threw 1/3 inning of scoreless relief against Boston College on Thursday, May 1, to give him 18-1/3 innings pitched on the week without allowing any earned runs. Torra now stands 5-3 on the season with a 3.57 ERA and 39 strikeouts.
UMass currently has a 20-16 overall record, and is tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division with a 12-6 mark. The Minutemen return to action tomorrow, March 6, when they travel to Siena for a 4:00 p.m. game.
