Baseball's Clegg Picks Up Weekly Honor From A-10
May 4, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior southpaw Mitchell Clegg was tabbed Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week in recognition of his outstanding performance on the mound against Saint Bonaventure, it was announced on Monday. The award is Clegg's second of his career and second of the season, the third weekly honor for a member of the Minutemen this spring.
Clegg pitched eight shutout innings in the opening game of UMass' three-game set against the Bonnies, giving up just two hits to move to 5-1 on the year. The Minutemen swept the series with Bonnies over the weekend, including Clegg's 6-0 victory on Friday. The Woburn, Mass., native also posted a new career high for strikeouts in the outing with 12 as his previous high was 10, set last season at Duquesne. Clegg's 12 strikeouts also marked the most by a Minuteman since Apr. 16, 2005, when Matt Torra fanned 16 batters in 10.2 innings against Saint Joseph's.
Two weeks ago, Clegg was named A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week as his masterful pitching performance highlighted head coach Mike Stone's 600th career win. Clegg worked all nine innings for UMass in the 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's and scattered six hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Clegg is currently ranked second Atlantic 10 in strikeouts (65), fourth in opponent batting average (.227), tied for seventh in wins (5-1) and 12th in earned run average (4.02).
The Minutemen will return to the diamond Wednesday, May 6, as they will make the trip across the state to take on Northeastern in Boston at 3:00 p.m.
