April 19, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball senior right-hander Bryan Leigh was tabbed co-Atlantic 10 pitcher of the week, the conference office announced on Monday. This marks Leigh's first career weekly honor and the first weekly award for a member of the Minutemen this season. Leigh was also named the UMass Athlete of the Week, and will be honored at the weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday.
Leigh helped propel UMass to a 3-2 record last week by pitching two complete games for a total of 18.0 innings, logging a pair of victories with a 2.50 ERA and nine strikeouts. On Apr. 14 on the road at Boston College, Leigh threw 145 pitches on the way to his first win of the season, helping the Minutemen defeat the Eagles, 8-4. In the outing, he allowed four runs on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
On Sunday, Apr. 18, Leigh clinched UMass' series victory at Rhode Island by posting a stellar performance on the mound as the Minutemen pounded the Rams, 13-1 in game three of the teams' A-10 series. Leigh went the distance without walking a batter and closed out the contest with seven shutout innings. He scattered nine hits and struck out three, as well.
Leigh has appeared in six games on the year, starting three. He holds a 2.88 ERA as a starter with 18 strikeouts in 25.0 innings.
The Minutemen (7-19, 5-7 A-10) will return to action tomorrow, Apr. 20, when the squad will play host to Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
