April 14, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - After helping UMass to a 3-1 week that included a series victory over Saint Louis and a win vs. Northeastern to advance to the Beanpot Championship game, freshman Mike Geannelis and redshirt junior Adam Picard both collected weekly honors on Monday. Geannelis was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Rookie of the Week, while Picard shared UMass Athlete of the Week honors with Bridget Lemire of the softball team and rowing's varsity 8+ boat.
Geannelis pitched three hitless shutout innings of relief in the Minutemen's 3-2 series-clinching win over Saint Louis with no walks and no strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory. He also was UMass' DH for two games on the weekend and went 3-for-9 at the plate with a run scored, including one multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 in the Minutemen's 7-1 win over the Billikens.
Picard hit a team-best .500 (7-for-14) over the four-game stretch last week, including a blistering .636 (7-for-11) over the Saint Louis series, that helped raise his season batting average 50 points. The right fielder had three multi-hit games on the weekend against the Billikens, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and 2-for-3 with a run scored in UMass' pair of wins in the series, while hitting 2-for-5 in the 2-1 loss in the series finale.
The Minutemen next travel to Central Connecticut on Tuesday, April 15, and will play host to UMass Lowell on Wednesday, April 16. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
