AMHERST, Mass. - Former University of Connecticut pitcher Dennis Accomando has been added to the UMass baseball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Mike Stone announced on Wednesday. Accomando was a three-year letterwinner with the Huskies from 2007-09 and has joined the Minutemen for the upcoming 2013 campaign.

"We welcome the addition of Dennis Accomando, who brings energy and experience to our ballclub," said Coach Stone. "His primary responsibilities will be working with the hitters and infielders, while also serving as first base coach. Dennis should also give us a stronger recruiting presence in the Southern New England and New York area."

Since 2009, Accomando has owned and operated D and M Pro Baseball, a private baseball instruction business. He has coached various 14-16U AAU teams out of Fairfield County in Connecticut, guiding his squads to a Plymouth Massachusetts Invitational Championship, Greater New Haven Baseball Conference championships, and an East Shore Travel Baseball conference championship. In 2011, the team was ranked in top-8 in the state and appeared in the 2012 AAU Triple Crown National Championships, held in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

After transferring to UConn following his freshman year at Western Connecticut State, Accomando pitched three seasons with the Huskies and helped the squad to a pair of BIG EAST championship finals appearances. As a senior in 2009, he appeared in 20 games in relief and logged a 3.46 earned run average over 13.0 innings of work with 17 walks, 48 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .200.

Upon graduating from Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Communications in May 2009, Accomando signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves. He was a part of the Danville Braves 2009 team that set a league record for wins and captured the Appalachian League championship.

A 2005 graduate of Masuk High School in Monroe, Conn. where he was a team captain, Accomando returned to his alma mater in 2012 to serve as head JV baseball coach and varsity assistant.

Accomando played summer ball with the Danbury Westerners in the NECBL in 2008 and will be coaching with the Holyoke Blue Sox (NECBL) this summer.
