Former Minuteman Torra To Pitch In World Baseball Classic

AMHERST, Mass. - Former UMass pitcher Matt Torra has selected to play for Italy in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, it was announced recently. Italy, which will be competing in Pool D with the United States, Mexico and Canada in Phoenix, Ariz., will begin action in the 16-team tournament on March 7.
Italy will open against Mexico followed by games against Canada and Team USA on March 8-9. The matchup with Team USA will be played at Chase Field, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In 2012, his eighth season of professional baseball, Torra started 23 games for the Durham Bulls, the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, and posted a 4.10 earned run average over 147 innings with 26 walks and 78 strikeouts and opponents hitting .261 against him. He signed with the Washington Nationals organization this offseason.
In three years with the Minutemen (2003-05), Torra logged 227 strikeouts and 62 walks over 229.1 innings and posted a 3.26 ERA with a record of 16-12. He was selected with the 31st pick overall in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
