RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond outfielder Vito Chiaravalloti went two for four with a home run and two runs batted in, to lead the Spiders to a 7-4 victory over the University of Massachusetts baseball team in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Final Series. Richmond improves to 46-13 on the season, and wins the series two games to none. The Minutemen conclude the season with a 26-19 overall record.

Richmond opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first inning. First baseman Jim Fasano hit an RBI double and outfielder Vito Chiaravalloti added an RBI single, with the other runs scoring on a groundout and a sacrifice fly. UMass came back with two runs in the bottom of the first to make the score 4-2. Junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) led off with a double, then moved to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) added an RBI single to drive in senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), who had walked and moved to second on a wild pitch.

The Spiders added another run in the top of the third inning, on an RBI double by catcher Adam Tidball. The Minutemen cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third, when junior second baseman Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) walked, stole second, and came in to score on a throwing error by Fasano.

UMass added another run in the fifth when Maumus had an RBI single to knock in sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.), who had led off the inning with a single. The Spiders concluded the scoring with a solo home run by Chiaravalloti in the eighth, and a solo homer by outfielder Bryan Pritz in the ninth.

Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss for the Minutemen, allowing four runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning of work. Freshman righthanded pitcher Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw well for the Minutemen in relief, allowing three runs on six hits in 8-1/3 innings of work.

 

 

Righthanded pitcher Mike McGirr earned the win for the Spiders, allowing four runs on five hits in five-plus innings. Matt McLoughlin earned the save, tossing four shutout innings of relief.

Following the game, three Minutemen were selected to the 2003 All-Atlantic 10 Championship Team. Senior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.), freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) and Reynolds were all honored for their play during UMass' four games in the tournament.
