NORWICH, Conn. - Freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) went three for four with four runs batted in, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to an 8-5 victory over Xavier in the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Dodd Memorial Stadium. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 26-17 on the season, and advance to next week's Atlantic 10 Championship Final Series.

Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) picked up the victory to improve to 4-3 on the season, allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six-plus innings of work. Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Scott Ratliff (Helendale, Calif.) came in to pitch the final three innings for the Minutemen, allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Ratliff earned his seventh save of the year, to tie the school single season record. Lefthanded pitcher Sean Finnegan took the loss for Xavier to fall to 2-3, allowing six runs on nine hits in 6-1/3 innings of action.

UMass opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, when Curreri hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two out. The Minutemen increased the lead to 4-0 with single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI double in the fourth, while senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) added an RBI single in the fifth.

Xavier cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, on a two-run single by first baseman Mark Andres. But UMass came right back with two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-2 game. Both Curreri and senior catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) had RBI singles in the inning.



The Musketeers made the game close with three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh, to make the score 6-5. Andres had another two-run single in the inning, while second baseman Eric Greenwell added a bases loaded walk. The Minutemen then concluded the scoring with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Curreri had another RBI single in the inning, with the other run scoring on an error.

UMass will now face Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Championship Final Series. The best two-of-three series will take place at Richmond next Thursday through Saturday, May 22-24.
