CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UMass baseball team dropped a pair of contests in a doubleheader against Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field, falling in game one 15-3, and suffering a 4-3 setback in game two. Following the two-game set, the Minutemen are now 11-30 overall, 4-16 in the Atlantic 10, while the Musketeers improve to 26-23 on the season and 13-7 in conference action.
After beginning the nightcap with a 4-0 deficit through an inning of play, UMass came up just short of a comeback in the late innings. Four straight two-out RBI singles staked Xavier to the early lead.
Sophomore Conor LeBlanc and senior Ron Wallace limited the Musketeers to just four hits, all singles, over the final six innings without allowing another run to keep the Minutemen within striking distance.
Then in the top of the eighth, UMass managed to push a run across. Junior Rob McLam reached on an error and scored following back-to-back two-out singles by redshirt sophomore Adam Picard and junior Dylan Begin.
The next inning, three of the first four batters for the Minutemen, junior Kellen Pagel, freshman John Jennings and redshirt junior Ryan Cusick, all singled to load the bases. Senior Rich Graef reached with a fielder's choice and picked up an RBI to bring the score to 4-2, while McLam drove in pinch runner Dan Jonah with a single to center. However, with the potential tying run at third, Xavier escaped any further damage with a ground ball to first that ended the contest.

Scott Klever earned the victory (5-4) on the mound for the Musketeers as he allowed one unearned run on seven hits over 7.2 innings, walked two and fanned one. Alex Vice pitched the remaining 1.1 innings and surrendered two runs on four hits en route to the save (7).
The Minutemen opened game one in a 14-0 hole after Xavier put up nine runs in the first and added five more in the third.
UMass broke up the shutout in the sixth as Begin reached on an error, moved to third on a double by junior Nik Campero, and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jeff Cavanaro. However, the Musketeers took the run right back with a solo home run by Jacob Bodner in the bottom half of the inning.
