UMass Falls To St. Joseph's 14-8

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team was defeated at Earl Lorden Field this afternoon by St. Joseph's University by a score of 14-8. The Minutemen were unable to complete the three game sweep after they won both games of doubleheader yesterday. Massachusetts completes the regular season with a mark of 24-17, 14-7 in the Atlantic 10, while SJU improves to 17-31 and 9-14 in the Atlantic 10.
The Minutemen took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) hit a three run homer in his first plate appearence of the day. St. Joseph's cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second, but UMass scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to go up 5-1. The Hawks then scored 12 straight runs, crossing the plate five times in the fourth inning and seven more in the fifth. Massachusetts managed two runs in the sixth and just one more in the eighth.
Freshman righthander Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) took the loss for the Minutemen as he lasted just four innings, surrendering 10 runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out five. Righthander Erik Holman got the win for the Hawks as he relieved starter Erik Vardijan in the third inning and finished out the game, giving up three runs on five hits as he walked five and struck out three.
The Minutemen closed out the regular season on Senior Day as five seniors received ovations for their commitment and success. Seniors Altieri, Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.), Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.), Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), and John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) were honored prior to the game.
The Minutemen return to action at the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament held this Thursday through Saturday, May 15-17, at Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn.
