AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team dropped a pair of games to Fordham here at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon. The Rams took the first game 9-4 before winning the nightcap 6-4. With the defeats, UMass falls to 20-26 on the season, 8-15 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham improves to 13-35-1 overall, 6-17 in conference action.
In the first game, the Minutemen took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a pair of Fordham errors. Sophomore Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) singled up the middle, and raced all the way to third when Ram starter Derek Hucke fired a pickoff attempt past his first baseman. Senior Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) then fisted a ground ball to shortstop, but Jason Conlisk could not make the play.
Fordham took a 3-1lead in the third, scoring three times on three hits off UMass starter Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.). The Minutemen rallied for a pair of runs to tie the contest in the bottom of the third, but Fordham scored four times in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Santos threw his seventh-consecutive series-opening complete game, but was touched for nine runs, seven earned, on 14 hits. Hucke picked up the win, upping his record to 4-8.
In the second game, UMass again jumped out to an early lead, scoring four times in the bottom of the first. Fordham starter John Baco settled down however, holding the Minutemen scoreless over the last six innings. The Ram offense awoke in the fourth, scoring three times on two hits and two Minuteman errors. The Rams tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth on a Dillon Ford RBI single, and took the lead on Kurt Thomas' two-run blast in the top of the seventh.
Baco earned the win, improving his record to 4-7. Sophomore Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) picked up the loss in his first career complete game.
The Minutemen and Rams will finish their three-game series with a nine-inning contest on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon. UMass will honor the five seniors on this year's team with a brief ceremony before the game.
