Minutemen Tame Black Bears 15-8

GORHAM, Maine - The University of Massachusetts defeated Maine 15-8 on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of the University of Southern Maine. UMass improves to 12-30 overall while the Black Bears fall to 27-14.
UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ryan Franczek led off the game with a home run to left center field. The Minutemen made it a 2-1 game in the top of the second inning when Michael Weiner homered to left center.
Maine regained control in the bottom of the second when Ross Cantara singled to shortstop. Ray Vallee followed with a singled to third base and Aaron Izaryk hit a two-run double, his second double of the game, to give Maine a 3-2 edge.
The Minutemen offense then exploded, scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Weiner doubled to left field, scoring when Andy Tuetken singled and advanced to third on an error. Travis Munsey drove in the fourth run of the game for UMass when he singled to left field scoring Tuetken. Anthony Santos continued the run, doubling to left field before Franczek walked and Jason Twomley was intentionally walked to load the bases. Curt Szado singled to right field scoring both Santos and Franczek. Twomley scored the fifth run of the inning for UMass on a double steal. Weiner followed with a single to right field scoring Szado and Adamski, making it a 9-3 Minuteman game.
Maine added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one each in the sixth and seventh innings. The Minutemen added three runs in the top of the seventh inning and three in the top of the eighth for the 15-8 win.
Chris Lloyd went five innings for the Minutemen on the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out five. He improves to 2-0 on the season. Scott McGovern went 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while Jeremy Demers went 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit. Matt Torra pitched the final inning for the Minutemen.
UMass is back in action tomorrow at Central Connecticut. The Minutemen return home this weekend when they host Rhode Island. As a reminder, Sunday's game will be aired by CSTV on tape delay on Monday.
