Baseball Downed By Temple, 8-2

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (16-22, 8-10 Atlantic 10) lost Sunday's finale of a three-game set against Temple University (19-22, 7-11 Atlantic 10) this afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Lorden Field.
Owls starter Chris Kurtz went the distance scattering nine hits and throwing over 140 pitches for the win.
The Owls scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as UMass trailed the entire game. A pair of back-to-back two-out RBI-singles were followed by a two-run home run by centerfielder John Quigley, giving Temple a 4-0 advantage.
UMass would answer with a run in the second courtesy a sac fly from junior centerfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.) to make it 4-1, Owls. Junior leftfielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) knocked home the other Minutemen run with a one-out double down the leftfield line plating senior captain Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) to cut it to 4-2, Temple at the end of the third.
A Temple run in the fifth along with three in the seventh sealed the win for the Owls.
Sophomore DH Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) was one of three Minutemen to finish the afternoon with two hits, including a double.
UMass returns to action Tuesday, May 11 at Vermont. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Centennial Field.
