May 8, 2005
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Massachusetts (11-30, 5-13) beat Temple (11-30, 4-14), 3-2, this afternoon at Ambler Field to win their first series of the season. The Minutemen scored all three runs in the top of the ninth to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Senior Keith Doherty (quincy, Mass.) threw 8.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs to pick up the win. He struck out seven batters. Junior David Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) came in in the ninth and shut the door for his first save of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, Temple opened the scoring when Matt Lafferty singled to center to score Dan Brady, who had walked earlier in the inning.
Down 1-0 in the top of the ninth, sophomore Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) singled up the middle. A fly out recorded the second out of the inning, and then Adamski stole second. Freshman Andy Teutken (Smithfield, R.I.) reached base courtesy of an error by the third baseman which also scored the tying run. Sophomore Travis Munsey (Durham, N.H.) singled through the left side to move Teutken to third, and then Munsey swiped second base. Sophomore Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) delivered the two-out go-ahead hit with a single to right-center, scoring both runners and giving UMass a 3-1 edge.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jason Connor roped a triple down the right field line, and then a Mike Weckenman single pulled the Owls within a run. Sullivan then replaced Doherty on the hill and struck out the first batter he faced. Brady was able to force a walk to put runners on first and second, but then Sullivan got Lafferty to hit into a 1-4-3 game-ending double play to seal the win.
UMass travels to Maine and Central Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home to face Rhode Island next weekend.
