Torra Throws Complete Game Shutout In Split Versus Temple
May 7, 2005
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Massachusetts (10-30, 4-13 A-10) used the performance of junior Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) to earn a split against Temple (11-29, 4-13 A-10) this afternoon at Ambler Field. Torra threw his sixth complete game and third shutout of the season in a 5-0 game one victory. The Owls took game two 6-4.
In game one, the Minutemen got on the board in the top of the second when sophomore Michael Weiner (Easton, Conn.) doubled down the right field line, and then scored on an error by the shortstop on the next play.
In the third, UMass put up three more runs to put the game out of reach. Freshman Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.), freshman Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) started the rally with three consecutive singles, the latter of which scored Franczek. Twomley then swiped second base and then a throwing error by the catcher allowed Garrity to score and Twomley to reach third. The third run of the inning came with a sacrifice fly by senior Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.).
In the fifth, UMass tallied their final run when Szado singled in his second run of the game after Garrity had singled and Twomley had walked.
Torra allowed just three hits, struck out eight, and walked none en route to his fourth victory of the year.
In game two, a four-run sixth inning was not enough to catch up to the Owls. Sophomore Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) started the inning with a single through the left side. Franczek then walked, and Twomley reached on an error to load the bases. Another error by the shortstop allowed Szado to reach base and Santos to score. Yet another error allowed sophomore Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) to reach base and scored Franczek and Twomley. A groundout by Weiner scored the fourth and final run for the Minutemen.
Temple needed just two innings of scoring to seal the second game. In the bottom of the second, Dan Brady led off with a single and Dan Lafferty followed suit with a single of his own. Frank Nunan loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Tom Dolan flew out to left to score Brady, and then Justin Cooper singled to put the Owls up 2-0.
In the third, Temple put up a decisive four runs on the board, capped by a pair of two-run doubles by Lafferty and Nunan.
Adamski went 2-for-3 in game two, while Franczek, Garrity, and Weiner all had a pair of hits in game one.
The Minutemen look to capture the series when they face the Owls in the finale at 12:00 PM.
