AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Norheastern 8-7 at Earl Lorden field this afternoon. The offense was led by junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) who went three for four with two runs batted in. Senior captain Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) went two for three with two runs batted in as well while senior right fielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) who was one for two with four runs batted in, including the game winner.

Freshman starting righthanded pitcher Jason Hickey (Stamford, Conn.) threw five and two-thirds innings giving up six runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Freshman righthander David Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) picked up his first career save as he pitched one inning, giving up no hits and no runs, and hitting one batter. The win is the sixth straight for the Minutemen, improving their record to 22-16 overall while Northeastern falls to 15-19 overall with the loss.

Northeastern took a quick 1-0 lead as Mike Steinberg hit a home run on the first pitch of the game. The Huskies then scored two more runs in the top of the second before Massachusetts tied the game at three in the bottom of the inning. The Minutemen took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third when Boulanger drove in senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) on a sacrifice fly to right field. UMass then scored two more unanswered runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to take a seven to three lead.

Northeastern made it seven to six with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Massachusetts then scored the eventual game winner when Boulanger again drove Morgan home on a sacrifice fly, this time to left field. Northeastern put up one more run in the top of the eighth but could not overtake the Minutemen as Sullivan closed them out in the ninth.



The Minutemen are back in action Thursday, May 8, as they host Central Connecticut at Earl Lorden Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
