UMass Baseball Loses To St. Bonaventure, 13-3

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Freshman righty Kyle Johnson held the Minutemen to just five hits through seven and two-thirds innings, leading the Bonnies to 13-3 win over the Minutemen on Sunday. The Minutemen dropped to 22-19-1 on the season and 9-8-1 in the A-10. The Bonnies stayed in first place in the A-10 East while improving to 24-13 overall, 11-7 in the conference.

St. Bonaventure struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Jason Milleisen hit a three-run home run over the right-center fence off of UMass starter Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.), putting the Bonnies up 3-0 going into the third inning.

UMass responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) walked to lead off the inning, then senior Shaun Skeffington (Fall River, Mass.) followed with a double to left-center. Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) plated Ellerbrook and Skeffington with another double to the left-center gap, pulling the Minutemen to within one.

The Bonnies used five hits and three UMass errors in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 8-2 after four innings of play. Johnson allowed just one hit over the next four innings before he was replaced by sophomore Saul Solveson in the eighth.

UMass' third and last run of the game came in the eighth inning when Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded, brining home Kulak from third.

Hourigan took the loss for the Minutemen, dropping to 3-2 on the season after allowing three runs on three hits in the first two innings.

UMass returns home on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with Maine at Earl Lorden field, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
