MONTPELIER, Vt. - Massachusetts (9-29) faltered to the Vermont Catamounts (20-13-1), 7-3, this afternoon at Recreation Field. UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but UVM responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and never lost the lead.

After the first two outs of the game were recorded, senior Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) started a rally by reaching on an error by the third baseman. Senior Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) then doubled down the right field line to score Twomley, and sophomore Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) singled in Szado on the next play.

In the bottom of the first, Rossi started the inning off with a single to center, and then Chapman followed suit with a single of his own. Carey used an infield single on the next play to load the bases, and then a Magrass triple put the Catamounts up, 3-2.

The Minutemen put up their third and final run in the top of the third when sophomore Michael Weiner (Easton, Conn.) drove in Twomley with a single after he had reached on an error by the second baseman.

Vermont solidified the win in the bottom of the fifth by putting up three runs, capped by a two RBI ddouble down the left field line by Carey.

Szado went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored while Adamski and Weiner also had an RBI each. Freshman Andy Teutken (Smithfield, R.I.) went 2-for-4.

The Minutemen are back in action when they travel to Temple for a three-game weekend series. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's finale are set for 12:00 PM.
