UMass Baseball Defeats St. Bonaventure 1-0
May 4, 2003
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman righthanded pitcher Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw a complete game to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure at Earl Lorden Field this afternoon. Torra struck out six, surrendering just three hits and walking none. The win completes the Minutemen's weekend sweep of St. Bonaventure, as UMass improves to 20-16 overall and 12-6 in the Atlantic 10. St. Bonaventure falls to 20-18-1 overall and 7-10 in the Atlantic 10.
The Minutemen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as freshman Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) singled to drive in senior Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) from second base. Altieri had singled and then reached second as junior Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) grounded into a fielder's choice.
Altieri's run proved to be the game-winner for the second straight game after his home run was the difference in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader.
Torra's performance marked the third straight start in which he has gone the distance and won, as he improved his record to 5-3. All three UMass starters for the weekend pitched complete games with junior Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) each picking up complete game victories yesterday.
The Minutemen are back in action Tuesday, May 6, as they travel to Siena and then return home on Wednesday, May 7, to face Northeastern at 3:00 pm.
