AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Nick Gorneault's (Springfield, Mass.) seventh home run of the season keyed an eight-run first inning to lead UMass to a 17-0 win over Siena at Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday. The Minutemen improve to 21-16-1 with the win, while the Saints drop to 14-25 with the loss.
After back-to-back single by senior Shaun Skeffington (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) to lead off the first inning, Gorneault launched his team-leading seventh homer over the right-center field fence, giving the Minutemen a 3-0 lead before the Saints could even get an out. UMass went on to score five more runs in the first, taking a 8-0 lead into the second inning.
Kulak hit his third homer of the season in the third inning, and went on to get two more hits in the game, finishing 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Each of UMass' nine starters collected at least one hit.
Junior Nick Skirkanich (Chesire, Conn.) pitched six innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four Saint batters, while improving to 4-2 with the win. Senior Jeff Reardon took the loss for the Saints, giving up eight runs on five hits and one-third of an inning.
