AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, to break a 7-7 tie and lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 12-7 victory over Vermont at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 16-15 overall this season with the win, while Vermont falls to 21-9 with the loss.

The Catamounts were up 7-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, when UMass rallied to score eight runs. Senior first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) doubled with one out, then scored on an RBI double by junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.). After freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) drew a walk, senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) hit an RBI single to drive in Reynolds, and Curreri scored to tie the game when the ball eluded Vermont left fielder Kyle Brault.

Twomley followed with his two-run homer, then senior catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) walked and scored on an RBI double by junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.). The Minutemen concluded the scoring on a two-run homer by senior second baseman John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.).

Seed finished the day two for four with three runs batted in, while Athas and Altieri also had two hits, and senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) added a solo home run. Vermont outfielder Jason Carey went two for three with three RBI, while Brault and designated hitter Chris Marsh both homered for the Catamounts.



Sophomore righthanded pitcher Anthony Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the victory for UMass out of the bullpen, striking out four in 3-2/3 shutout innings, while allowing only three hits. Senior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned the save, recording the final out in the ninth with the bases loaded. Vermont righthander Brett Dobens took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Minutemen return to action tomorrow, May 1, when they play a doubleheader at Boston College at 2:00 p.m.
