KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island junior pitcher Jon Scullin held the Minutemen to just five hits over nine innings on Sunday, leading the Rams to a 2-1 win over UMass. The Minutemen drop to 20-16-1, 8-6-1 in the conference, with the loss. The Rams improved to 21-21-1, 5-10 in the A-10.
UMass got its only run in the top of the first inning on a double steal. Sophomore Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball. Sophomore catcher Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) walked with two outs, then stole second base, allowing Kulak to score on the play.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rams hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, scoring Scullin and junior Ryan Cooney. Scullin shut the Minutemen offense down for the final three innings, allowing just one hit over the final three frames.
Sophomore Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Mass.) took the loss despite another strong performance, going the distance while allowing just six hits.
