PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman righthanded pitcher Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw a complete game to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 7-2 victory over Temple at Erny Field. Torra did not allow any earned runs and struck out nine, while scattering 10 hits and walking only two. UMass improves to 15-15 overall and 9-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple falls to 16-19 overall and 8-7 in the Atlantic 10.

The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of unearned runs. Outfielder Al Roach reached on an error with two outs to allow first baseman Rob Cucinotta to score, then Roma came in to score when outfielder John Quigley reached on an error.

UMass cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, when junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) doubled and scored on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.).

The Minutemen then took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the top of the eighth. Curreri, senior pinch hitter Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore outfielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) all had RBI singles in the inning, with the other run coming in to score on a passed ball. UMass concluded the scoring with two more runs in the top of the ninth, on an RBI triple by Reynolds and an RBI single by Boulanger.

Curreri finished the day three for four with two runs batted in, while Reynolds was two for four with a double, a triple and three runs scored. In addition, Boulanger, Szado, junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) and senior second baseman John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) all had two hits for the Minutemen.



Designated hitter Gene Burpoe led Temple by going three for three with two walks. Righthanded pitcher Matt Powell took the loss for the Owls, allowing five runs on 13 hits in 7-1/3 innings of work.

The Minutemen are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 30, when they will play host to Vermont in a 3:00 p.m. game at Earl Lorden Field.
