Baseball Downs Holy Cross 10-4

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) went three for five with four runs batted in, including a three-run triple in the top of the seventh as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Holy Cross 10-4, this afternoon at Fitton Field. UMass improves to 16-15 on the season, while Holy Cross falls to 15-19.
With Holy Cross in front by a score of 3-2, senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning when he singled in junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.). After Holy Cross took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third, Kulak singled in senior designated hitter Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) and then Connell Clark tripled in Kulak to give UMass a 5-4 lead.
In the seventh, junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) singled in freshman second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) and then Kulak hit the three-run triple driving in junior designated hitter Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.), Senez and Gorneault as UMass took a 9-4 lead. Gorneault hit a solo home run for his seventh of the season in the top of the ninth to give UMass a 10 4 advantage.
Senior lefty Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the season as he pitched six innings allowing four runs with three earned on seven hits and striking out six. Senior righty Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) earned his second save of the year as he pitched three shutout innings allowing three hits and striking out five.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, May 1, when they take on Harvard at Fenway Park in the first day of Beanpot Classic, at 2:00 p.m.
