JAMAICA, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (6-24, 2-9 A-10) split a doubleheader with the Fordham Rams (24-15, 9-5 A-10) this afternoon in New York. Junior Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) picked up his second win of the year, throwing a complete game, while senior Jason Twomley (Ware, Mass.) and sophomore Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) both homered in game one.

In game one, the Minutemen exploded for all 13 runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. In the third, sophomores Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) both singles to start the rally. Freshman Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) flew out to right, plating Santos. A Twomley single and a walk from senior Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) loaded the bases. Two consectuive errors allowed three more runs to score, putting UMass up 4-0.

In the fifth, Rankin singled through tht right side after fresman Zach Thomas (East Haddam, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. Garrity then singled in Thomas, and Twomley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout provided the second out of the inning, Adamski blasted a pitch over the wall for his first-career grand slam, increasing the lead to 9-1.

The Minutemen added more insurance in the next frame, capped by Twomley's three-run homer, his 10th of the season. Garrity went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Torra tossed all 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one run. His ERA improves to 1.37 with his fourth complete game of the year.

In game two, the Rams scored in the first five innings to secure the win while the Minutemen were held to just four hits. Szado went 2-for-3 in the game with a double. Tom Davis picked up the win for Fordham, going the whole way while striking out seven and walking none.



The Minutemen will try to win the series tomorrow when they square off with the Rams in the series finale set for 12:00 PM.
