Baseball Downs Northeastern 6-5

AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshman shortstop Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled in senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) in the bottom of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Northeastern University, 6-5, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 12-12, while Northeastern falls to 8-19.
UMass scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second when sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) singled in Gavin Clark. The Huskies then scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth including a RBI triple by Coley O'Donnell in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. The Minutemen cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but O'Donnell then hit his third home run of the season in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 5-2.
UMass scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Ellerbrook singled in Gavin Clark, junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded and sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Junior righty Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) shut down the Huskies in the eighth and ninth before Stojanowski drove in Gavin Clark to give UMass the win. Hourigan earned the win to improve to 3-1 as he pitched two innings allowing no runs on one hit, while Matt Pileski received the loss.
The Minutemen return to action on Friday, April 20, when they travel to the Bronx, N.Y., to take on Atlantic 10 foe Fordham in a doubleheader at noon.
