Minutemen Down Holy Cross 13-3

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) went four for six with a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 13-3 victory over Holy Cross at Fitton Field. The Minutemen improve to 12-10 on the season with the victory, while the Crusaders fall to 8-17 overall with the loss.
Holy Cross led 2-0 after two innings of play, before UMass took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the third. Senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) and junior second baseman Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) both drove in runs in the inning. The Minutemen then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, to increase their lead to 6-2. Senior first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) had an RBI double in the fifth, Athas added an RBI double in the sixth and sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) delivered an RBI single in the seventh.
After Holy Cross scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, UMass blew the game wide open with three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. Athas had a two-run single in the ninth, while Maumus, Morgan, senior catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) and junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) also drove in runs in the late innings.
Sophomore righthanded pitcher Mike Crane (Braintree, Mass.) picked up the victory to improve to 4-0 on the season, allowing only two earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in a complete game effort. Righthanded pitcher Jason Lynch took the loss for Holy Cross to fall to 1-2, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5-2/3 innings.
Morgan finished the day three for five with two RBI, while Twomley was three for five with an RBI and Altieri went two for four with an RBI.
UMass returns to action this weekend, when it will battle Rhode Island for first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division. The Minutemen and the Rams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19, at 12:00 p.m., then conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, April 20, at 12:00 p.m.
