Hawks Take First Two Games Of Weekend Series
April 16, 2005
Amherst, Mass. - Saint Joseph's needed extra innings not once, but twice to defeat the Minutemen, as they took first two games of the weekend series. The Hawks took game one of the double header in 11 innings by the score of 4-2 and the second 8-7 in nine innings.
In game one 3rd baseman Nicholas Baldasari delivered a crucial two out single in the 11th inning that scored Rob Pimpinella from third and Jeremy Jakubowski from second. The hit broke a 1-1 tie to give the Hawks the 3-1 lead. Saint Joseph's would get an insurance run on errant throw by Minuteman catcher Bryan Garrity to make it 4-1. In the bottom half on the 11th, Jason Twomley doubled to start the inning and was knocked home by sophomore Bryan Adamski's single making the score 4-2. That was as close as the Minutemen got as they were unable to manufacture any more runs.
Junior Matt Torra (1-3) was the tough luck loser for the Minutemen. Torra tossed 10 2/3 innings surrendering just two hits and one earned run while striking out 16 and walking two. After giving up a double in the 2nd inning, he retired 23 consecutive batters before allowing a single Adriano Petrutz in the 10th. Picking up the win for the Hawks was sophomore Jeff Williams.
In game two, Hawks shortstop Andrew Heineman drew a one out walk in the 9th and was moved in to scoring position by Jeremy Jakubowski's single. An error by UMass shortstop Zach Thomas allowed Heineman to score the go ahead run to make it 8-7. The Minutemen attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as DH Mike Weiner singled to right field, but were unable to put any runs up on the board.
Twomley went 1-3 as he homered for the ninth time this season. He also drove in two to bring his team leading total up to 14. Senior Curt Szado and Adamski both went 2-4 with a double each.
Game one winner Jeff Williams came on to pitch one inning to pick up the win (4-2). Junior David Sullivan tossed two innings of relief and earned the loss (1-3).
The two teams will return to action tomorrow at 12:00 PM at Earl Lorden Field for the series finale.
