April 14, 2002
KINGSTON, R.I. - Four Minuteman pitchers allowed seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the University of Massachusetts baseball team dropped the third game of an Atlantic 10 series at Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, UMass falls to 12-16 on the season, and 4-8 in conference paly. Rhode Island moves to 16-19 with the win, and is also 4-8 in conference play. The two teams are now tied for third place in the Eastern Division of the Atlantic 10.
The Minutemen fell behind in the fourth inning, as URI's Justin Lamboy singled home Jared Lydon to score the game's first run. Rhode Island then added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, UMass starter Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.), who had pitched admirably for the first seven innings, forced Matt Sullivan to pop up and got John Blaze to strikeout for a pair of quick outs. Mike Rainville then followed a base hit and a walk with a three-run homerun to chase Doherty from the affair. Reliever Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) then walked a batter and allowed a pair of hits and was replaced by junior Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) before recording an out. Boulanger was then touched for homerun, hit a batter and allowed a homerun before being replaced by freshman Matt Mitchell (Roslindale, Mass.), who struckout Lydon to end the inning. In the frame, the Rams picked up seven runs on six hits and one UMass error to build a 10-0 lead heading into the ninth.
In the final inning, the Minutemen put together three consecutive basehits, including a John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) RBI-single, but were retired before getting another hit.
UMass now prepares for Tuesday's meeting with Boston College in the first round of the Beanpot Classic at Fenway Park. The Classic begins with Harvard and Northeastern playing at 11:00 a.m. before the Minutemen and Eagles face off at 2:30 p.m. The Minutemen will then return home for a midweek contest with Connecticut on Wednesday before hosting A-10 foe Temple in a three-game series next weekend.
