Baseball Downs St. Bonaventure 17-13

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) singled in sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) and junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) in the bottom of the sixth to give the Minutemen a 12-11 lead as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated St. Bonaventure, 17-13, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 10-12 (6-3 A-10), while St. Bonaventure falls to 12-12 (4-5 A-10). The Minutemen went 2-1 in the three game series as the teams split a doubleheader on Friday.
The UMass offense was led by senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) who each had three runs batted in. Clark hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for his sixth of the season, while Altieri hit a two-run double in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
The Minutemen were down 11-7 going into the bottom sixth when it scored five runs to take a 12-11 lead, including the single by Boulanger. Freshman righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned his second win of the season as he pitched 3-1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, April 17, when they host Connecticut at Earl Lorden Field at 3:00 p.m.
