UMass Sweeps Doubleheader At Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - Senior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) tossed a complete game in the opener, and sophomore lefthanded pitcher Scott Ratliff (Helendale, Calif.) threw 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief in game two, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Fordham at Jack Coffey Field. The Minutemen won the first game 2-1, before claiming a 4-3 victory in the second game. UMass improves to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Rams fall to 7-16 overall and 3-7 in the A-10.

In the first game, junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) put UMass up 1-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, but Fordham tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Kurt Thomas. The Minutemen then scored the winning run in the top of the seventh, when senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) doubled and later scored on an error. Chown picked up the win to improve his record to 3-2 on the year, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

In the second contest, UMass took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, with senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) hitting an RBI double and later scoring on a passed ball. The Minutemen added a run in the second when freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled and scored on a wild pitch, then made it 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Curreri. The Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before Ratliff closed the door to earn his fourth save of the season. Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) earned the win to move to 2-2 on the year, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings.
 

 

The Minutemen and the Rams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow, April 14, at 12:00 p.m.
