STORRS, Conn. - Despite a career-best outing by sophomore righthander Brandon White (Foster, R.I.), the University of Massachusetts baseball team dropped a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to the University of Connecticut at J.O. Christian Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, UMass falls to 9-15 on the season, while UConn improves to 15-11.

Connecticut scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Brett Burnham raced home on a passed ball to give the Huskies the lead. Burnham led off the frame with a single, and Dan Trubia followed with a one-out base hit. Mike Mocerno then walked to load the bases, but Tyler Stefkovich lined out to shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) for the second out of the inning. After Burnham scored on the passed ball, White worked out of the jam by forcing Mike McDonough to line out to Athas.

UMass would try to rally in the top of the fifth, as Tim Klett (Chicopee, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning. Second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) then reached on an error to give the Minutemen runners on first and second with no outs. But after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Connecticut starter Josh MacDonald retired the next two UMass batters to get out of the inning.

White kept the Minutemen in the game as he cruised through the final four innings without allowing more than one baserunner in any frame. White finished the contest with a career-best eight innings pitched in his first complete game. He allowed eight hits, walked two (one intentional) and struck out four.

UMass will travel to Boston on Thursday for a one-game set against Northeastern at 3:00 p.m. The Minutemen will then return to Atlantic 10 Conference action as they play Rhode Island in a three-game series in Kingston, R.I., this weekend.
