Baseball Falls To Dayton 11-6
April 7, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior outfielder Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) went four for five with a double, a home run and four runs batted in, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team was defeated by Dayton 11-6. UMass falls to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Dayton improves to 17-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Dayton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on four walks and a pair of infield singles. The Minutemen cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the first, when Senez doubled and came in to score on an error. In the third inning UMass tied the score at 5-5, on a three-run homer by Senez and a solo home run from junior catcher Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.).
The Flyers regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by third baseman Aaron Reesh. The score remained 6-5 until the seventh inning, when Dayton added two more runs on an RBI single from Andy Boehmer and an error. The Flyers scored another run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to increase their lead to 11-5, before an RBI single by Senez in the bottom of the ninth concluded the scoring.
In addition to Senez's strong performance at the plate, junior first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) and sophomore second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) both went two for four on the day.
Senior righthanded pitcher Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) took the loss despite a strong outing in relief. Hourigan pitched seven innings out of the bullpen, allowing only one earned run on five hits while striking out six. Righthander Mike Kerins earned the victory for Dayton to improve to 6-0 on the season, allowing five runs on nine hits in eight innings of work.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, April 9, when they play host to Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m.
