Dayton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on four walks and a pair of infield singles. The Minutemen cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the first, when Senez doubled and came in to score on an error. In the third inning UMass tied the score at 5-5, on a three-run homer by Senez and a solo home run from junior catcher Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.).

The Flyers regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by third baseman Aaron Reesh. The score remained 6-5 until the seventh inning, when Dayton added two more runs on an RBI single from Andy Boehmer and an error.
