Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Duquesne

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team split a doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass is now 6-11 (3-2 A-10), while Duquesne is 10-15 (1-4 A-10). UMass won the first game 9-5, while the Dukes took the second game 9-6.
Senior lefty Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) earned the win for UMass in the first game as he improved to 1-2 on the season. He pitched all seven innings allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit a two run home run in the sixth for his first of the season. Senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) each had two runs batted in for UMass.
In the second game, Duquesne started off by hitting three consecutive home runs in the top of the first for a 4-0 lead. UMass then answered back in the bottom of the third with five runs, including RBI singles by Gorneault and junior infielder Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.), to take a 5-4 lead. The Dukes then scored three in the top of the fifth and two in the top sixth, before UMass scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) received the loss and Matt McMunn earned the win.
UMass will take on Duquesne tomorrow in a single game at noon.
