Big 7th Lifts UConn Over UMass Baseball, 12-5

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team held a 3-2 lead through six, but a big seventh inning helped lift Connecticut to a 12-5 win over the Minutemen at Earl Lorden Field on Monday afternoon. With the setback, UMass falls to 6-10 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 15-12.
UConn tallied three hits in the first on the way to a 2-0 start to the afternoon. Ryan Fuller sent a one-out double down the left field line, stole third and came home on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by LJ Mazzilli. Mazzilli advanced to second on a single by Jon Testani and went to third on an error before Joe Pavone plated him with a sacrifice fly for the Huskies' second run.
The Minutemen went down in order in the first, but managed to cut their deficit in half by manufacturing a run without a hit in the second inning. Redshirt freshman Adam Picard drew a one-out walk and later scored on a bases loaded walk to freshman Jeff Cavanaro.
Then in the squad's next turn at bat, UMass tied the score up at 2-2. Sophomore Rob McLam led off the frame by ripping a single through the left side, went to second on a sacrifice and to third on a passed ball. With two away, Picard stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch of his at bat through the left side to bring in McLam.
McLam later scored the go-ahead run for the Minutemen in the bottom of the fifth. After legging out a bunt single, McLam went to second on an error and to third on a ground ball before coming home on an infield hit by Picard.
However, the Huskies broke the game open by scoring nine runs on eight hits, all singles, in the top of the seventh. UConn plated eight of its nine with two away after an error extended the inning.
The Huskies tacked on their 12th of the afternoon in the top of the eighth courtesy of an RBI double by Fuller. Sophomore Dylan Begin then scored on a wild pitch in UMass' half of the inning after drawing a leadoff walk.
Freshman Tim Stoops was tagged with the loss (0-1) after pitching one-third of an inning of relief and letting up five unearned runs on four hits. Starter Conor LeBlanc tossed 6.1 in his outing and allowed three runs, two earned on six hits and walked one.
Jared Dettmann registered the win (2-0 for UConn. He surrendered three unearned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings on the hill.
McLam finished the contest with three of UMass' seven hits, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a walk and two runs scored. Picard went 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
Fuller helped lead the way for the Huskies' offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and three runs scored. Mazzilli hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored twice, while Testani went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
UMass will be back in action on Thursday, Apr. 5, taking on La Salle in its first home Atlantic 10 series of the season. Game one is set for a 3 p.m. start on Earl Lorden Field.
