Minutemen Defeat Hartford 9-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) had a double, a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and two walks, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Hartford at Earl Lorden Field. The Minutemen improve to 4-8 on the season with the win, while Hartford falls to 1-12 with the loss.
UMass took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer by Morgan, then made it 3-0 in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.). After the Hawks scored a single run in the top of the fourth, the Minutemen took control of the game with four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) singled to drive in two runs during the inning. UMass added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then the Hawks concluded the scoring with one run in the seventh.
Sophomore righthanded pitcher Mike Crane (Braintree, Mass.) earned the victory in relief, to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. He did not allow any earned runs and struck out six, while giving up only two hits in 4-1/3 innings. Righander Adam Flaherty took the loss for Hartford, allowing six runs on six hits in 3-1/3 innings of work.
Morgan finished the day two for two, while Twomley went two for four with three runs batted in. No Hartford player had more than one hit.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, March 29, when it plays a doubleheader at La Salle at 12:00 p.m.
