RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning and once in the bottom of the eighth to break open a tie game and defeat the University of Massachusetts baseball team 7-2 here on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, its eighth straight, UMass falls to 5-10 on the season, 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play. Richmond, ranked 25th nationally, improves to 19-2 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 with the win.

UMass senior starting pitcher Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.), who cruised through the first six innings, ran into trouble in the seventh. After a pair of two-out walks, Vito Chiaravalloti blasted a three-run homer over the right-center field fence. Adam Tidball followed with a blast over the left field fence to make the score 6-2. Freshman Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) then entered the game to get the final out of the inning, which came on a diving catch by senior right fielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.).

Richmond took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, when Chiaravalloti scored on a Bryan Pritz sacrifice fly. The Spiders then expanded their lead in the fourth, as Chiaravalloti crossed the plate on Pritz's double to right center. Richmond loaded the bases with one out in that frame, but Santos worked out of the jam by forcing John Cronin to ground into a double play.

UMass tied the game in the sixth, as sophomore Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) led off with a towering home run to left field. After two outs, senior Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) walked and stole second. Senez raced home on a single by senior Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.).

Richmond starter Mike McGirr went the distance for the win, moving his record to 5-1. Santos picked up his first loss of the season and is now 2-1. Santos went 6-2/3 innings, allowing six runs, all earned, on ?? Hits.



The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. UMass will stay on the road on Wednesday, as it makes the short trip to Hartford for a 3:00 p.m. Contest.
