PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 schedule on Saturday, being swept in a doubleheader by Duquesne 6-4 and 7-1.

In game one, the Dukes jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and held on to win, 6-4. Senior Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) led the UMass offense with a two-run homer, while junior Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) went two for three. Freshman Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw a complete game, but took the loss.

In game two, Duquesne scored all seven of its runs in the fifth inning while UMass got its lone run in the seventh. Sophomore Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in four-plus innings. No Minuteman had more than one hit, with the lone UMass run scoring on a passed ball.

The Dukes improved their season record to 9-9 (2-0 A-10) while UMass is now 2-7 (0-2 A-10). Game three of the series will be played tomorrow at noon at Duquesne Field.
