Minutemen Drop Heartbreaker to Dartmouth in 12 Innings
March 21, 2002
BRADENTON, Fla. - Dartmouth scored five times in the top of the 12th inning without the benefit of a hit to defeat the University of Massachusetts baseball team 10-5 here on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, their fifth straight, UMass falls to 5-7 on the season. Dartmouth improves to 3-6 with the win.
The Minutemen led 5-1 heading into the ninth inning, but Dartmouth scored four times to push the game into extra frames. In the ninth, the Big Green used a pair of doubles, a single, two walks and a hit batsman to complete the comeback.
After senior righthander Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman lefty Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) retired the side in the 10th and 11th, respectively, Twomely ran into control problems in the 12th. Making his first career pitching appearance, Twomely, normally an outfielder, walked five and hit a batter in the final frame.
UMass fell behind early in the contest, as Brian Zurhellen scored on an RBI groundout by Jason DaCosta in the top of the third. The Minutemen responded with a score of their own in the bottom of the third. Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) beat out an infield single and raced around to home on an RBI double off the bat of Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.).
Massachusetts would then expand the lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh and a pair of tallies in the sixth. UMass was able to keep the Big Green off the board, allowing just two hits through the first eight innings.
The Minutemen will now travel to Richmond for the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play. UMass and Richmond will face off in a pair of seven-inning games at Noon on Saturday before playing a nine inning series closer at Noon on Sunday.
