UMass Falls To Yale 6-1
March 18, 2003
BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) went two for four with a double, a stolen base and a run scored, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team was defeated by Yale 6-1 at Academy Park. The Minutemen fall to 1-5 overall this season with the loss, while Yale improves to 3-4 on the year.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with all three runs coming across on an error with the bases loaded and one out. Yale increased its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third, plating a run on an RBI groundout.
UMass scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Athas doubled and scored on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.). Yale would then conclude the scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh, on a two-run double by Chris Elkins.
Righthander John Janco earned the win for the Bulldogs, allowing one run on seven hits in five-plus innings of work. Freshman righthander John Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) took the loss for the Minutemen, giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits and five walks in 2-1/3 innings.
UMass returns to action tomorrow, March 19, when it faces an opponent to be determined in Bradenton, Fla. Tomorrow's game is being scheduled to replace Monday's UMass-Indiana game, which as canceled due to rain.
