Minuteman Bats Silenced, Fall to Wright State 7-0
March 17, 2002
BRADENTON, Fla. - Wright State starter Brian Stephens threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout to lead the Raiders to a 7-0 win over the University of Massachusetts baseball team here at the IMG Baseball Academy on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, their first in five games, the Minutemen fall to 5-3. Wright State improves to 3-8 on the year.
The Raiders capitalized on a bevy of UMass miscues early in the contest to jump on starter Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.). After Chris Tuttle led off the bottom of the first with a base hit, he moved all the way to third after a failed pickoff attempt by Chown. In the second, Wright State turned three Minuteman errors and a single by Tom Bohr into three runs.
After working out of a first-and-third jam with one out in the first, Wright State starter Stephens mowed down the Minutemen, allowing just two baserunners the rest of the way. He finished the afternoon with eight strikeouts and no walks, with 18 fly outs by UMass batters.
UMass will continue their play in the IMG Baseball Academy College Competition as the Minutemen take the field tomorrow against Vermont. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
