Minutemen Down Columbia 4-0

BRADENTON, Fla. - Freshman righthanded pitcher Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw a complete game two-hit shutout, to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Columbia. Torra struck out seven and did not allow any walks, while throwing only 70 pitches and earning the first victory of his collegiate career. The Minutemen now stand 1-4 on the season with the win, while Columbia falls to 3-5 with the loss.
UMass opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, when senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by senior catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.). The Minutemen increased the lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) led off with a double, then scored on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.). Later in the inning, Twomley scored on an RBI single by Boulanger.
UMass concluded the scoring with one more run in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman outfielder Kristian Molloy (Hillsborough, N.J.) led off with a single, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Altieri.
Altieri led the Minuteman offense by going three for four with a double and an RBI, while Boulanger was two for four with a triple and an RBI.
UMass returns to action tomorrow, March 17, when it faces Indiana at 2:30 p.m. in Bradenton, Fla.
