UMass Falls To Northern Iowa 14-5

March 15, 2003

Box Score

SARASOTA, Fla. - Junior designated hitter Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) went two for four with two runs batted in, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team was defeated by Northern Iowa 14-5 at Ed Smith Stadium. The Minutemen fall to 0-4 on the season with the loss, while Northern Iowa improves to 6-7 with the victory.

UMass trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third, before scoring its first run on an RBI single by Sarno. The Panthers came back with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth, to increase their lead to 11-1. The Minutemen responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, when junior second baseman Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) delivered a two-run single, and both Sarno and sophomore outfielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) added RBI singles. But that was all the offense UMass could manage, as Northern Iowa scored three more runs in the late innings and held on for the win.

Junior third baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) joined Sarno as the only Minutemen to collect two hits in the game. Northern Iowa was led by outfielder Adam Boeve, who went three for five with a double and four runs batted in.

Northern Iowa righthander Kory Kelchen earned the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work. Junior righthander Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) took the loss for UMass to fall to 0-2 on the year, giving up six runs and four hits in 2-1/3 innings.

UMass returns to action when it faces Columbia in Bradenton, Fla., on March 16 at 3:00 p.m.
