Baseball Batters Sacred Heart, 8-6
March 14, 2002
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Adam Stojanowski's (West Roxbury, Mass.) third hit, a bloop single to right field, snapped a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning and Massachusetts went on to post an 8-6 victory over Sacred Heart here on Thursday at Harbor Yard.
Sacred Heart staked starter Dan Scott to a 2-0 lead after two innings, the second run coming on centerfielder Matt Lemanczyk's first home run of the season. The Minutemen tied the score in the third on freshman Jason Twomley's (Fitchburg, Mass.) towering two-run home run to right center. The hit was the first of Twomley's collegiate career.
UMass jumped in front, 6-3, by scoring three times in the fifth, a rally that featured triples by Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) and Stojanowski, and Cullan Maumus' (New Orleans, La.) RBI bunt single. Scott balked home the third run of the frame. Sacred Heart tied the score with three runs in the sixth on a pair of walks, Eric Mittelstadt's RBI single and Brian Rojee's two-run double.
The save went to Scott Ratliff (Helendale, Calif.), the third of three UMass pitchers, who finished up with two scoreless innings. Sacred Heart filled the bases with two out in the ninth on a pair of walks and Mittelstadt's third hit of the afternoon, but Ratliff struck out Brian Moir to end the game.
UMass, now 4-2, collected 16 hits off Scott and loser Rob Duell, who surrendered single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Ratliff, along with starter Mike Crane (Braintree, Mass.) and winning pitcher Brandon White (Foster, R.I.), combined for 14 strikeouts.
The Minutemen will travel to Bradenton, Fla., on Friday to face six opponents in the Sunshine State. UMass will face Northern Illinois on Saturday before facing Wright State and Vermont on Sunday and Monday. All three games are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
