BRADENTON, Fla. -- UMass Head Coach Mike Stone got career win No. 400 with a 4-0 win over Canisius on Monday afternoon. The Minutemen improve to 1-6 on the season with their first win of the season.
Stone is currently in his 18th year as a head coach on the Division I level, posting a record of 400-312-3 (.562). He is one of only nine current coaches age 45 or younger to have collected 400 wins. Now in his 13th year at the helm of the Minutemen program, Stone has compiled a 346-222-1 record (.598).
The Minutemen got on top early and never gave up the lead. Sophomore Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) singled off Canisius starter Tim Smith with one out in the bottom of the first inning. After stealing second, Kulak scored on a Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) double with two outs, putting the Minutemen ahead 1-0.
UMass extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. After John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) led off with a walk, senior captain Shaun Skeffingon (Fall River, Mass.) followed with a single, advancing Seed to third. Kulak scored Seed on a groundout to second base and Morgan knocked in Skeffington with a two-out single.
Senior Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.) led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. After stealing both second and third, O'Connell scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Steve Asadoorian (Whitinsville, Mass.).
Junior David Loonie (Longmeadow, Mass.) and senior Todd Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) combined for the seven-hit shutout. Loonie got the win, pitching a two-hitter through five, with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Minutemen will be back in action again tomorrow in Bradenton. UMass will face Atlantic 10 foe La Salle at 7:30 p.m.
