Minutemen Outlast Quinnipiac, 5-4 in 11 innings
March 10, 2002
HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) sprinted home from third base on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th inning to score the game-winning run in a 5-4 victory for the University of Massachusetts baseball team over Quinnipiac here on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UMass moves to 3-2 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 0-2.
After UMass opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on an RBI basehit by junior Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), Quinnipiac plated a single run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead.
The Minutemen answered in the top of the sixth, as they scored two runs on back-to-back RBI singles by junior Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) and senior Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) with two outs to even the score.
The Braves had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as UMass starter Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) ran into trouble. Quinnipiac loaded the bases with one out, forcing head coach Mike Stone to bring senior righthander Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) from the bullpen. Hourigan retired two consecutive batters to get out of the jam.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until Clark capped a two-run UMass rally in the top of the 11th. Quinnipiac tried to bounce back in the bottom of the 11th with a leadoff homerun by Chris Vartuli to make the score 5-4, but junior P..J. Washenko (Orange, Conn.) retired the next three batters to earn his first save of the season.
The Minutemen will return to action on Thursday, March 14, as they make the trip to Fairfield, Conn., for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Sacred Heart.
