UMass Shut Out By Alabama, 12-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama senior outfielder Beau Hearod went four for four with a home run and seven runs batted in, to lead the 24th-ranked Crimson Tide to a 12-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts baseball team. With the victory, Alabama sweeps the three-game series from the Minutemen, and improves to 12-3 on the year. UMass now stands 0-3 on the season.
The Crimson Tide scored two runs in the first inning, then added single runs in both the second and third innings, before blowing things wide open in the bottom of the fourth. Alabama put six more runs on the board in that frame to increase its lead to 10-0, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Hearod. The Crimson Tide scored two more runs in the fifth inning to conclude the scoring.
Junior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) and junior third baseman Adam Stojanowksi (West Roxbury, Mass.) led the Minuteman offense with two hits each, while sophomore outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) added a double for UMass' only extra-base hit.
Alabama junior lefthander Jeffrey Norris allowed seven hits in seven shutout innings to earn the win, improving his record to 2-1 on the season. UMass sophomore lefthander Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs in 3-1/3 innings of work.
UMass returns to action when it faces Northern Iowa in Bradenton, Fla., on March 15.
